(01/02/07) RFS Volume Standards To Rise?
The first day of the Senate Energy and Natural Resource Committee's biofuel conference commenced today with discussions focused heavily on cellulosic ethanol production.
The answer to guarantee a market for cellulosic ethanol is to raise current RFS standards which are currently set at 7.5 billion gal/yr by 2012. Corn based ethanol is estimated to max out around 15 billion gallons. Renewable Fuels Association President Bob Dinneen said when asked about RFS standards, "Don't be shy in terms of providing a big, bold number." Dinneen declined, however, when asked to give what he thinks the number should be for the new RFS standard.
