Governors from 37 different states make up the Governor's Ethanol Coalition (GEC), and the group hasrecently delivered a letter to President Bush detailing a number of biofuels recommendations. Among the more significant points included were:
- Advance and increase the renewable fuels standard (RFS) target from the current 7.5 billion gallons by 2012 to 12 billion by 2010
- Require 15% biofules (by energy content) of motor fuel consumption by 2015
- Grow this ratably to 25% biofuels of motor fuel consumption by 2025
- Add another 76.5 cpg ($256/mt) to the ethanol credit for product derived from biomass (cellulosic) sources
- Convert the ethanol blenders' credit to one for producers instead
- Force major branded service stations to steadily add E85 pumps
- Require at least 70% of new vehicles sold be flex fuel (FFV's) within the coming ten years
Various funding proposals were also suggested in the letter, including over $200 million for biomass re-search during the present year.
